Windows Defender is a built-in antivirus for the Windows OS developed by Microsoft. If you wish to create an exception in Windows Defender, follow the quick steps given below.

Adding Exception In Exceptions To Windows 10 Firewall

  • On your Windows computer, click the Start menu available at the bottom-left corner of the desktop.
  • Click the Settings icon from the left-side panel to launch Windows Settings.
  • Alternatively, you can launch Windows Settings by pressing the Windows + I shortcut keys.
  • Select Update & security in the Settings window and click the Windows Security tab from the left-side panel.
  • Under Protection areas, click on Virus & threat protection.
  • Click on Manage settings beneath Virus & threat protection settings.
  • Under the Exclusions section, click on Add or remove exclusions.
  • You will be directed to the Exclusions page.
  • Click the Add an exclusion button to creating an exception in Windows Defender. You will be prompted to define your exclusion by File, Folder, File type, or Process.
  • If you wish to exclude a file, select File and you will be allowed to browse the file that can be excluded from future scans.
  • Select the file you wish to exclude and click Open.
  • If you wish to exclude a folder, select the Folder option on the Exclusions page and search for a specific folder to exclude from future scans.
  • Excluding the folder from the scans on Windows Defender also makes the content and subfolders excluded from the folder.
  • To exclude file types, select the File type option and enter the file type such as PDF or DOC to be excluded for scanning in the future.
  • To exclude any process, select the Process option and choose the process to be excluded from scans in the future.
  • Once you have created the exception in Windows Defender, it will be displayed on the Exclusions page.
  • To remove the added exclusions/exceptions, select it on the Exclusions page and click Remove. If you need remote assistance to create an exception in Windows Defender, click the call button.
